Additional Information: The competently constructed basket/tray with outswept sides

Antique Work Basket in Original Bittersweet and Black Paint, Ash Splint, Carved & Notched Handle
New England, Possibly Maine, 19th Century
Basket remains in very good condition and displays bright color; rectangular, wide bands of splint alternate
with narrow bands in colors of bittersweet and black; bentwood handles.

Measurement: Height: 3.5"; height at handle: 7.5"; diameter: 7.5"
Material: Turned wood base, oak staves, and rim, woven with cane
Condition: Good, shrinkage to handle
Additional Information: This example, a shallow round basket with carved swing
handle pinned to hand cut brass ears, turned base with molded base edge, the interior
with incised concentric rings. The staves are made of oak and woven with cane; half
round hoops of oak are single wrapped with cane.

Probably Native American Made, Northeastern United States Date/Period: 19th Century
Measurement: Height: 5"; width: 5"; depth: 3.25"
Material: Woven wood splint [ash], polychrome
Condition: Overall excellent, one trivial break to bottom splint; loss of .75-inch narrow
splint at base of back. Best dark patina
Additional Information: A must unusual, very small example retaining original, highly
oxidized red and green paint with yellow decoration. A very old shoelace facilitates
hanging. The basket was obviously well loved and likely used by several generations of
weavers.

Condition: Two minor bits of rattan loss, note noticeable, displays well
Additional Information: A rarely encountered open/round fruit basket of traditional
form. Bent rattan handles held by rattan weavers; The two piece rattan rim
[interior/exterior] is laced together with rattan and affixed tiny square escutcheon pins;
closing the circumference gap is rattan laid flat; turned wood interior/exterior bottom.

Condition: Very good, bottom has tree small mouse chews, two the size of a dime, the
other a nickel. Original paint, dry patina.
Additional Information: The instant we saw this fine work basket and the subtle
tonality if it’s red and yellow painted decoration it spoke to us aesthetically in the
manner of Mark Rothko. We consider it one of the great baskets.
