Black Bellied Plover Decoy in Striking Position
Unknown Maker, Probably North Shore of Massachusetts
Second half of 19th century
This outstanding rarity, a striking decoy having glass bead eyes was carved of white
pine and unidentified hardwoods; three-piece construction, body and head joined at
mid-neck for strength. The favorite delicacy of this species is crickets-hence the highly
animated, striking position. As descended, historic surface and original bill. Ex Bob

Additional Information: A rare mechanical, black-bellied plover decoy by Nathaniel
Wales & Snow, Boston, Massachusetts based on the Wales patent of 1868, the wings
are fabricated from cardboard and canvas, a cord weaves through the wood carved
body. Stamped “WALES & SNOW PATENT.”

Condition: In very good condition with gunning wear, bill is old hunter’s replacement
Additional Information: With its head sharply turned almost ninety degrees, this decoy
was made by Lombard Jones for his uncle, Dr. Lombard Jones. Influenced by the
Chipman family's hollow turned-head shorebirds that were also gunned in Sandwich's
Old Harbor. Lombard Jones is known to have made yellowlegs and several peeps.

Material: Softwood body, hardwood “root head”
Condition: A neat working period “make-do” copper brace to side of neck at juncture of
the body; crack in the side of bird expertly filled and blended. Original paint.
Additional Information: A very good folk art sculpture, this specie, of this quality, age
and originality are scarcely encountered. …displays a wonderful surface.

Additional Information: Carved and painted Canada goose decoy with glass eyes
displaying good lines and surface. Trivial wood loss to front edge of lid above keyhole
now worn smooth displaying a rich patina…simply wear from use/handling. A knot is
absent at rear of lid.
