Punched decoration, fine weathered patina with traces of original black paint, most well preserved on area protected by the door, interior with worn original white paint. Remarkably, this delicate object remains in a fine state of preservation, the door hinges and latch in perfect working order. Although possibly made to advertise a tinsmith shop, this giant punched tin lantern could have just as likely been made as a beacon of hospitality for an Inn or tavern; a loop at the top of the interior enabled an actual conventionally sized lantern to hang from a chain inside it to illuminate the punched designs of the lantern. (Sold with a custom fabricated wall mounting display bracket which is not seen when employed.
