Hand-forged wrought iron standing splint holder with a tripod base and slender stem rising to opposed paddle-shaped splint holders. The stem incorporates a symmetrical openwork baluster-shaped element. The outer surfaces of the tripod legs retain the characteristic concave profile of slit rod produced at an ironworks slitting mill, an important constructional feature supporting an exceptionally early date. Attribution remains uncertain because of the holder’s great age. While the form is probably European, with possible Scottish or Irish origins, Colonial American manufacture cannot be ruled out. The holder almost certainly saw use in Colonial America, where resin-rich candlewood was widely used as an illuminant.
