Hand-forged wrought iron standing combination rushlight holder with a three-footed convex “X” base, a form associated with the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The shaft is lap-forged in two sections, the lower section of heavier gauge with a spiral twist, the transition marked by a forged collar. The cylindrical candle socket is formed from relatively thin wrought iron with a rolled, overlapped seam, a construction characteristic of the mid to late 18th century. The shaft retains a deliberate but somewhat uneven forged surface, suggesting the work of a rural smith while reflecting an effort toward the more refined workmanship of the period through the addition of the collar. The combination of an earlier base form with later socket construction supports a mid-18th century date.

Item Condition: Good condition with a well-developed, age-appropriate patina. Wear is present at the rushnip pivot, gripping surfaces, candle socket rim, and feet, consistent with prolonged use.
