A rare transitional form of bottle between the onion and the straight sided mallet. The manufacturing of the bottle began as an onion form and then two opposing sides were marvered (flattened). The shape of the early wine bottles made it difficult to store them in the cellar. The bladder bottles allowed the bottles to be placed on their side, preventing the cork from drying out. While this was an improvement in design, for some unknown reason, it was rarely made, and bladder bottles are one of the rarest of all sealed bottle forms. This is a particularly good example.
