This is a particularly lovely onion form with a large seal on the mid to lower shoulder of the bottle. The large seal shows an Earl’s coronet over addorsed “C“s signifying Cornbury and Clarendon. Henry Hyde was an important person in seventeenth century English history. His sister, Anne Hyde, was the first wife of King James ll – mother of the two future Queens, Mary and Anne. Henry Hyde went into exile with King Charles l son, Charles, who returned to England in 1660 to become King Charles ll. His brother-in-law became King James ll in 1685. Henry Hyde was his primary advisor. He is mentioned many times in the diaries of John Evelyn. Therefore, this is not only a particularly beautiful bottle form, but it was also made for one of the most significant figures of this time in English history.
