Early 19th century wrought iron rushnip holder mounted on a painted beech stool-form base. The holder features flared jaws, a twist-work stem and arm terminating in a rolled candle socket. The square stool has concave corners and is raised on four turned legs. This example is illustrated in Richard Ashley, The Rushlight and Related Holders: A Regional View (2001), p. 184, photo 138. Ashley notes that the originality of stool bases on standing examples warrants caution, as redundant milking stools or similar forms may have replaced earlier plain block bases.
