A miniature ruddy duck by celebrated Cape Cod carver A. Elmer Crowell, depicted standing upon its original carved and painted oval base. The compact, wonderfully rounded body is enriched by Crowell’s carefully delineated wing and breast feathering, with warm russet-brown plumage, black crown, boldly painted white cheek patches, and characteristic blue bill.

The bird retains its delicate applied metal legs and webbed feet, the latter individually painted and positioned upon the base. Particularly appealing is the combination of Crowell’s accurate observation of the species with the wonderfully direct, almost folk-art character for which his smaller bird carvings are admired. The underside bears Crowell’s impressed rectangular maker’s stamp: “A. E. CROWELL / MAKER / EAST HARWICH / MASS.” A beautifully surfaced and highly engaging example of Crowell’s miniature waterfowl.
