The slanting hinged lid opening to a well, the top japanned and painted with figures of ladies and courtiers strolling beside oriental pavilions and temples with trees and fluttering birds, all in tones of red, green and white with raised japanning, the landscape rendered in stenciling, the sides with stenciled fruit and leafage in tons of gold, green, and white.
It is interesting to note that in the fashion which is typical and charmingly peculiar to schoolgirl work in various media, the strict interpretation of the stylistic prototype, in this case an Oriental scene, is combined freely with stylistic models which are closer to home-here in New England, the use of Palladian windows and Georgian colonial buildings mixed with pagodas and temples.
