An exceptional late nineteenth-century Odd Fellows architectural ceiling medallion originally designed to surround a suspended chandelier or lighting fixture. The deeply modeled circular form is painted a vivid blue and ornamented with carved and applied devices representing traditional Odd Fellows iconography, including a heart-in-hand, hourglass, bow and arrows, and three interlocking links. The symbols surround an unusually elaborate projecting central chandelier boss composed of radial and faceted geometric elements. Concentric zigzag moldings, raised bosses, scrolling ornaments and diamond devices animate the broad painted field, while a faceted outer edge completes the strongly sculptural composition.
Collected in Baltimore, Maryland, the medallion survives with a particularly desirable undisturbed original surface. An outstanding example of American fraternal folk art, combining architectural ornament, symbolic imagery, bold geometric design, and exceptional surface. (Included is a custom fabricated wall-mounting devise for display)
