Wrought by Rhoda Bean in her 13th year, this sampler features the moral verse: The inscription noting Rhoda’s birth and age at the time of creation, speaks to New England needlework traditions emphasizing virtue and industry.
“We stand expos’d [sic] to every sin While idle without employ, Industry holds our Passions in, and keeps out all unlawful joy.” Three alphabets and verse centered by floral borders… embroidered at the base is a twin chimney dwelling flanked by large trees.
