Rare late-18th-century maritime portrait brooch depicting the merchant brig Delight, inscribed “DELIGHT” and “JOHN CLARK 1786.” Research in Lloyd’s Register for 1786 identifies a brig named Delight owned by J. Clark & Co.
The piece commemorates the documented merchant vessel Delight and its owner, John Clark, in the year 1786.
The miniature is finely painted on ivory and mounted within an engraved gold-fronted bezel. The reverse is fabricated in silver and retains its original Georgian pin assembly and suspension loop, allowing it to be worn either as a brooch or pendant.
The vessel is shown under full sail in calm seas, executed with remarkable detail for its scale, indicating the work of a skilled professional miniaturist.
