These “order boxes” were a (and clever) solution in the 1800s, especially in rural or small-town America before telephones became widespread. Patients could drop off a written request for medicine, a house call, or a refill at any hour without knocking on the doctor’s door in the middle of the night. The doctor would check the box, prepare whatever was needed, and leave it in the lower tray. Low-tech, effective, and privacy-respecting!
Included is a brass nameplate [for door] featuring concave corners and canted sides – mounted on conforming piece of walnut. The nameplate is signed “Lewis / 3 Wall St.”
