Vase features a manipulated rim, and twisted body

American ceramic artist recognized today as a pioneer of modern art pottery. Working in Mississippi from 1879 to 1910, Ohr produced thousands of thin walled, uniquely twisted, and brightly glazed vessels. His avant-garde, “no two alike” pieces were largely ignored during his life, leading him to store his work until its rediscovery in 1968 by James Carpenter from New Jersey. Among the most comprehensive collections of Ohr’s work today is the Robert Ellison Jr. Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where Ellison purchased some of his pottery directly from Carpenter. This vase is particularly nice in form and glaze, as well as the fact that the base is signed in script “George Ohr.”
