Likely New London, Connecticut Area
Portraits of a sea captain and his wife, attributed to Isaac Sheffield, (1807-1845). Consigned to auction by a direct descendant, the captain has been identified as Captain Thomas Snyder. The captain is holding a telescope upon which is written, “Age 24”. His ship at sea is shown through a window behind him. Captain Snyder’s wife is holding a copy of “Godey’s Lady’s Book”, suggesting that she was an educated woman who was literate; “Age 24” is also written on her portrait. The portraits were likely done around the time of the couple’s marriage.
Isaac Sheffield was a Connecticut limner who painted portraits of sea captains and their families in and around New London during the 1830’s and early 1840’s.
