Hand-forged wrought iron holder consisting of riveted jaws mounted on an upright with a forged counterweight terminating in a faceted ball. The ironwork is mounted in a turned wood base. This form is identified as a Peermen Holder in Fire & Light in the Home Pre-1820 (p. 202), intended to secure a peermen—a lighting splint prepared from the resinous wood of a moss fallen or bog sunken fir tree.
