The poster features illustrations of Niagara grapes and text promoting the new white grape variety, authorized by Samuel W. Seagrave, Uxbridge, Massachusetts.
The stone lithography insert of grapes is labeled “HEFFROM & PHELPS, 243 TO 249 PEARL ST. NY.” According to Jay Last in his history of U.S. lithographers “The Color Explosion,” Heffron & Phelps, originally known as Empire Lithographing Co., was a well-known New York City lithographer focusing on cigar box labels, but also produced trade cards and advertising posters. The firm operated until 1919, and was later known as Globe Lithographing Co.
Overprint insert for the merchant (“authorized agent for sale of the Niagara”) Samuel W. Seagrave, Uxbridge. Massachusetts. Seagrave is a common family name in Uxbridge. A Samuel W. Seagrave (1847-1933) is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Uxbridge, Massachusetts.
