Considered one of the finest Stipple engravings of the age, and certainly the finest printed portrait of Hamilton.

In the wake of Alexander Hamilton’s dueling death at the hand of Aaron Burr, a mourning nation had an immediate desire for portraits of this influential founding father.

Signed in plate at lower left: “Painted by Arch. D Robertson / 79 Liberty S.t” …; in plate at lower right: “Engraved by W. m Rollinson / 27 Pine S.t” Half-length portrait, standing, facing left; right arm raised above books on table; nearby are documents entitled “Liberty of the press” & “Carriage tax”; above shown Hamilton’s sword with the Society of Cincinnati eagle, military cap, a rolled map, more books and a document entitled “Reports on funding the public debt”.

Measurement: Frame: 17.75" x 23.75"; View: 13.5" x 19.5"

Material: Stipple engraving framed under glass in a period ebonized frame with gilt borders.

Item Condition: Margin reduced therefore two lines in plate, at the lower center which read: “New York Sept. 1st, 1804. Published at the Columbia Academy of Painting 79 Liberty St. & by William Rollinson 27 Pine Street” are missing. Light overall soiling: dark toning as depicted at lower right. Displays very well.
