An unusual and finely crafted portable candlestick lantern featuring four boldly turned barley-twist columns supporting a molded square top with a raised circular chimney opening. The glazed enclosure incorporates a hinged access door retaining decorative shaped brass mounts, hinges, and wire latch. A gracefully twisted brass carrying bail rises above the top, while four turned corner finials with small ivory accents provide additional ornamentation. The lantern rests on four turned bun feet. Of particular interest is the interior floor, featuring a series of concentric recessed rings designed to accommodate candlesticks with circular bases of varying diameters, preventing movement during transport. The upper [interior] chimney aperture displays evidence of exposure to heat and combustion, further confirming the lantern’s intended function. An appealing example of early domestic lighting, combining accomplished cabinetmaking, ingenious practical design, pleasing proportions, and richly patinated surfaces.
