Original flintlock musket with bayonet lug and bayonet catch; barrel bands with spring retainers’ secure ramrod. The forward band incorporated foresight and sling loop. Full stock with plain carved apron centering barrel tang. Brass furniture including triggerguard that is pierced to facilitate sling, traditional Dutch buttplate, barrel bands [lower two are friction fit, the upper double strapped band spring retained], sideplate, and vacant thumbpiece. The convex lockplate appears to be in original flint and is engraved with maker’s name: THONE – AMSTERDAM.
Thone Family History: (primarily Lambertus Michaelis Thone) were prominent gunsmiths in Amsterdam during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Their flintlock muskets and carbines are noted for their use in major historical conflicts, including the American Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch muskets were a critical alternative to the British “Brown Bess.” Thousands were purchased by the American colonies, often through agents like Benjamin Franklin, to arm the Continental Army.
