Catherine Stape’s Needlework Sampler, Maytown, Pennsylvania

Worked by Catherine Stape (b. 1821, Washington, Lycoming County, PA) at a private girls’ school in Maytown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This sampler features a “mile high” figure of a woman in a peach color dress and white bonnet with her dog, reminiscent of Lebanon’s Towering Ladies. It includes large birds worked in crinkled floss above hearts enclosing her parents’ names, set in a pictorial scene with a vibrant floral border. The Stape family, members of Maytown Lutheran Church, relocated to Maytown in 1830.
