Brass Mounted Flintlock Pistol, Lockplate Signed T. Richards

Brass Mounted Flintlock Pistol, Lockplate Signed T. Richards

A classic late-18th-century original flintlock pistol attributed to Birmingham gunmaker Thomas Richards (active c. 1747–1779/84). The barrel features decorative engraving near the breech (including scrolls and a teardrop motif), along with two small proof marks: crown over “P” (definitive proof) and crown over “V” (view), consistent with Birmingham private proofs of the pre-1813 period (often imitating London standards). The walnut stock is fitted with brass furniture, including a fan/shell carving centering the breech tang, a vacant thumb-piece escutcheon on the wrist, and a butt-cap featuring a mask (grotesque face). The brass trigger guard with long tang is engraved [border] and has a acorn forend; brass sideplate is engraved. The convex lockplate is signed “T. Richards” and retains its original flintlock mechanism. The pistol exhibits typical age-related patina commensurate with age and use…a solid example of provincial English gun making from the Georgian era that displays well.
