The heavy cylindrical front posts, blade arms, ball finials, and incised sausage turnings are all features encountered on Hudson Valley and southeastern New York ladderbacks.
The combination of bold blade arms…the turned medial stretchers, incised sausage-turned front stretchers, and the untouched painted surface, and overall form all work in concert producing a chair of great character.
The chair features four gracefully arched slats centered by robust turned stiles featuring ball and wafer finials; boldly shaped “blade” arms are above finely turned medial stretchers joining the rear stiles and front posts as do the distinctive incised sausage-turned front stretchers.
The chair retains an outstanding original dark painted brown finish with rich patina and honest wear.
A handsome and highly decorative example of early American country seating, a successful composition displaying strong proportions and a nice surface.
