A handsome and unusually shaped trade sign displaying the name C. W. BANNON in bold, finely executed gold lettering against a black-painted ground. The gracefully arched board features distinctive serpentine terminals, its elegant silhouette complementing the carefully proportioned serif letterforms. The restrained palette and accomplished lettering create a particularly pleasing graphic presentation. The sign retains a desirable, time-softened painted surface displaying appropriate wear and patina.

Historical Note: The sign was acquired in Springfield, Massachusetts, where an R. E. & C. W. Bannon partnership is listed as merchant tailors on East State Street in the 1855–1856 Springfield city directory. The correspondence of name, initials, and geographic origin suggests a possible association with this business. Although a definitive connection has not been established, the documentary reference provides an intriguing historical context for this distinctive example of nineteenth-century American commercial signage.
