19th Century Slip Decorated Redware Plate

Redware was produced in the Matawan and Cheesequake area of New Jersey during the eighteenth and nineteenth century. This plate is adorned with a slip decorated bird perched on a leafy branch further embellished above and below the bird with bands of wavy lines and dots of slip. However, similar decorated bird plates were also produced in southeastern Pennsylvania in the nineteenth century making it difficult to distinguish between the two areas. Some of the redware production in New Jersey during the 1700’ s and 1800’ s was also influenced by production in Pennsylvania. This plate presents an outstanding folky slip decoration, which is also one of the more profusely decorated bird plates of this type known.
