This is a finely potted semi-straight sided nineteenth century red earthenware jug from northern New England adorned with a colorful mottled green glaze. The shape of the jug is comparable to a variety of jugs and jars produced in the industry in North Yarmouth, Maine in the 1800s. This industry was likely the largest producer of red earthenware in the state of Maine and located about ten miles to the north of Portland, Maine. This type of jug was also produced at some of the small family-owned red earthenware businesses located to the west of Portland and Yarmouth. The brick red color of the clay is also indicative of most red earthenware made in Maine.
