Hand-Colored Engraving on Paper
Limited Edition, Number 13 of 75; Original Plate Destroyed
A finely detailed and evocative rendering of one of the most recognizable images of Colonial American history. British soldiers, advancing in formation, discharge their muskets into a gathering of Boston citizens, the dramatic confrontation unfolding before the architectural backdrop of King Street. Particularly appealing is the restrained palette of reds, blues, and warm earth tones, lending the composition considerable visual interest.
The engraving retains the original verses commemorating the tragedy, together with the names of its victims and the publisher’s inscription. Published in Boston by Charles E. Goodspeed and re-engraved by Sidney L. Smith in 1908, this example bears the circular limitation stamp, identifying it as number 13 of an edition of just 75 impressions, after which the printing plate was destroyed. An engaging and historically significant image beautifully presented and possessing considerable decorative appeal.
