Slip Decorated Redware Plate Possibly Made in Philadelphia

Slip Decorated Redware Plate Possibly Made in Philadelphia

This early nineteenth century elaborate slip decorated red earthenware plate with a coggled edge was made in southeastern Pennsylvania, perhaps Philadelphia. The plate is adorned in a symmetric slip decoration within quadrants, creating an aesthetically appealing design, which was manufactured utilizing a three-chambered slip cup. It is highly unusual to see this type of decoration on red earthenware considering that most of this type of pottery was intended for utilitarian purposes, where this object was transformed into a work of art.
