Rare Queen Anne Westerwald Jug – AR

Highly impressive German grey glazed Westerwald handled jug made for the English market. With applique abstracted flowerheads, seed pods and sgraffito stems infilled with cobalt blue background wash and manganese purple flower heads [and incises decoration]. On the front is a large roundel of conjoined initials ‘A R’ (for ‘Anne Regina’ or Queen Anne of GB c. 1702-1714) with detailed crown above, within a laurel leaf border. Lovely ovoid baluster form body on fully glazed rough flat base with rounded edge. Wide cylindrical reeded neck with manganese purple coloring. Exceptionally well potted (typical of this era).
