Connecticut, Roxbury area

Pinwheel [or rosette] carved crest rail rather than typical volute composition; the ears feature a rosette pattern as was favored Connecticut on many Connecticut case pieces…Also – note that the exaggerated shield-shape seat was designed with a cleft front.

Material: Nineteenth-century black paint over original salmon red. Crest rail, back posts, and stretchers are of chestnut; spindles are hickory; the seat is pine.
