Anonymous, Original Paint

Each standing figure carved in the round, one figure in sailor’s uniform wears a hat inscribed “US NAVY” across the brim, the other soldier in a Union Army uniform carrying a U.S. flag and saber…the maker paid particular attention to faces, and hair detail; uniforms are beautifully rendered…both in fine period paint.

Material: Pine, polychrome
Item Condition: Small but significant breaks and losses to both figures. The sailor holds a sword at his hip that is broken below the hilt, with an exposed iron pin for the missing blade; both feet are broken at the toe; losses to some fingertips, and the pieces are lost. The soldier's left foot is broken at the toe, as is the bottom of the flagpole; brim of Kepi hat is broken and missing, all pieces lost. Paint appears to be original, with no retouching observed under UV examination.
