Printed under the spout with the Great Seal of the United States within the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , FREE AND INDEPENDENT,” the eagle holding a banner inscribed “E PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak, printed on one side with a couple and their dog, before a cottage and with the other displaying a mountainous landscape view including a triple-arched bridge, a flock of sheep and a figure, the leaf spout highlighted in gilding and the whole banded in gold.

Literature: An identical jug is discussed and illustrated in David and Linda Arman, “Anglo-American Ceramics”, page 188, U. 7. At the time of publication, (1998) only two pitchers had been recorded. The authors comment on page 59 that in their research “…we discovered that almost 100% of the colored grounds found on the various pieces were manufactured by Enoch Wood and Sons.”
