Cottesloe, Western Australia
Created by John Cook, aged 10, in Cottesloe, Western Australia, this rare boy’s sampler depicts a large house with four 12-pane windows, a transom window above a red door with a black knob, and an 8-pane window above. Two birds perch on the roof between fireplace chimneys, with a red bird on each flowering tree flanking the house, connected by a picket fence. Two red crowns suggest English or Australian influence. The intricate imagery, unusual for male samplers, includes detailed house, birds, trees, and motifs, stitched in wool, indicative of the 1840s –1 850s.
