Mary G. Abell wrought this in the 10th year of her age / RM
Created by Mary G. Abell (b. May 20, 1798; Rehoboth, Bristol County, MA), daughter of War of 1812 hero Captain Caleb Abell and Elona Hodges-Abell. Mary Abel married Samuel Wheaton in May of 1819; died July 1876. Genealogy available.
This needlework features two finely dressed ladies at the bottom center, one presenting a bouquet to the other, they are flanked by a fruiting tree and a tree arching overhead…the vignette is centered by large thistle-like flowers. There are three compartmentalized alphabets and numerals.
The bottom inscription includes Mary’s name, age, and the initials “RM,” likely her instructress; the date 1812 is stitched on the second line following a row of numbers. A 3.5″ x 3.5″ finely stitched diamond motif is seen to the right of verse. Mary framed her work with an intricate multiple border – featuring a delicate swag on three sides and folk hearts in all four corners.
