Betsy F. Chase (1812-1879) was born in Hopkinton, New Hampshire; she married William Restieaux in 1830. Genealogy is available.

This sampler is inscribed: “Betsy J Chase, Hopkinton, Wrought this Sampler in the 11th year of her age, 1822.” The work features a floral and vine border centering four examples of the alphabet and numerals; the maker’s name within a leafy cartouche is flanked by birds, flowers and tree stumps, reflecting early 19th-century New England needlework traditions.
