Mary H White Needlework Sampler, Mrs. Fields School, Boston, April 8, 1825

Created by Mary H White at Mrs. Field’s School in Boston, this rare sampler emulates silk embroideries with a painted blue sky and the figure of Maria, a popular theme inspired by Tristam Shandy’s A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy (1774). Maria is depicted with a painted face, neck, arms, and hands, resting in a woodland scene with her dog Sylvo, on a leash. The central scene is framed by a rose border, and a link border. At the top are two lines of upper-and lower-case alphabets and numerals enclosed by a line border; on the left and right are stitched a vertical alphabet and numerals [A to Q at left – R to Z at right surmounting numerals 1 to 5] Mary framed her needlework within a heavy stitched “U” chain border.
