William Turvey, London
Three-stage large caliber swamped barrel, carved and brass mounted. This fowler features a full walnut stock having a long slender wrist and classic comb. The stock remains in excellent condition; a very good and elegant carved scallop shell is found behind the barrel tang which is centered by a “beavertail” with scrolled end profile carving. The three-stage three wedding band .80-caliber barrel is 60-inches in length; barrel displays a worn mark reading “Turvey – London”. Smooth barrel is mottled brown thinning to smoky gray near the breech. The lockplate is signed W. Turvey and is charcoal gunmetal gray as is the cock, frizzen and engraved tang. All brass furniture, trigger-guard with acorn finial, long tang with fan-like terminus, the bow displays floral engraving, overall border engraving. The three-screw sideplate displays competent engraving, screw heads also engraved. The buttplate with three-stage tang and pointed finial similarly engraved. The action is smooth and tight, overall excellent original condition. There are two small square wood pegs ensuring the integrity of a tight (closed) grain fissure under the butt; looks to be early working period repair, [neat to look at].
