An Outstanding William Billinghurst...
Cased Underhammer Target Rifle, with accessories
Magnificent Figured Walnut Stock
Billinghurst is the most famous of the New York rifle makers; born in 1807 he worked at different Rochester locations until his death in 1880.
The accuracy and quality of his percussion rifles was without peer.
The case is labeled in paint for shipment to Charles H. Post at Mansfield, Ohio; an Erie Railroad tag is glued to the inside cover addressed to a C.H. Post in Cleveland.
The sturdy box is made of birds eye maple and is fitted with many compartments accommodating tools and accessories including a Billinghurst mold with 3 bases and a spring loaded sprue cutter for two or three piece .50-caliber picket type bullets; a swedge with 2 fire-blued rods, a brass starter with steel rod and walnut knob and 3 percussion nipples. A tray contains the powder measure with hinged funnel, an ebony handled tool for sight adjustment, a #5 steel cutter for 1-inch diameter patches and a case key. A brass container holds one sample bullet.
Under this tray is another compartment holding a wide screwdriver for attaching the brass barrel rest with a small one screwed into the ebony handle, a nipple wrench and steel hammer, all with ebony handles. Also included is a brass drift for takedown purposes and two hickory rods for cleaning and loading. The stock is of outstanding figured walnut with a very small section of the toe most likely replaced when the rifle was built. The straight stock is flat point checkered at 16 lines per inch. Attachment to the barrel was via a tapered pin as was the tradition of so many New York makers. The rear sight is screw adjustable for elevation with a peep in tube. The frame and buttplate are of case colored steel with the combination trigger guard/mainspring showing a bright fire blue, as does the hammer. Light geometrical engraving adorns the breech, tangs and butt plate. Total weight of the barrel and stock is 17 pounds. The 31 1/8-inch barrel measures 1.5-inches across the flats and is marked "Remington Case Steel". The rear barrel sight is a spring steel "V"-notch with the front a pinhead in tube. A blind or pin is installed in the turning for the bullet starter. The bore has 8 lands and grooves and is in bright excellent condition.
