Date: Circa 1850

Measurement: Frame: 31.25" x 25.5", Sight Size: 22.5" x 17"

Material: Oil on canvas, with stencil of Goupil & Co., New York, on verso

Condition: Generally good condition; mentioned for accuracy is a trivial 13" crease caused by stretcher pressure one inch from bottom; the work is mounted within a spool and ripple-molded walnut and walnut veneered frame of the period... excellent grain; picture recently was lightly cleaned.

Also, "Folk Paintings of America" by Robert Bishop (1979) Page 60, plate 80; captioned as: "Seaport Town, artist unknown, oil on canvas, c.1840. Its monumental scale indicates that the artist probably looked upon it as a very important structure in the bustling harbor. (Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Kahn) The companion picture is again found in Young America, A Folk Art History" by Jean Lipman, Elizabeth Warren and Robert Bishop, page 71.
