Dutch Seventeenth Century Heemskerk Candlestick

This is an excellent example of the typical Dutch Heemskerk candlestick of the seventeenth century. This candlestick is tall and slender, displaying a strong presence. The evolved form dates to the medieval period, and this type, dating to the seventeenth century, is the culmination of form. The socket features a circular band top and bottom. The knopped stem has two 'inverted acorn' moldings on the shaft, smaller above the broad mid-drip pan and larger below. The shaft is raised on a circular, spreading domed base.

This candlestick has a supremely practical design, being sufficiently heavy to sit securely on rough oak tables and yet eminently suitable to be carried around the house as required. The high drip pan protected the hand from hot melted wax.
