A carved and painted jumping wooden carousel horse, the figure with glass eyes and carved mane. The breast collar is ornamented with a carved and painted American shield. This horse is painted reddish-brown dapple with black mane; the slightly curved saddle is yellow, blankets are painted yellow with red trim, the tack done in yellow and green. (Dimensions: 59" H, 4.5" W, 12" D.)

These powerful three-dimensional sculptures are fabricated on wooden armatures and
retain original paint and fabric. It appears that the straw/grass headdress was taller; the
other figures hair is adorned with beads and feathers. Very good condition considering
medium; minor imperfections consistent with age and use.
Each mask is approximately 29.5" high by 25" wide by 9.5" deep.

A popular and sensitively rendered figure displaying a signature saddle-blanket resembling a draped curtain; the pooch displays very good old paint; original surface history; likely very early second coat working period surface and original paint. Pretty much full coverage paint with scattered losses mostly limited to saddle seat; overall condition is very good to excellent. (L: 54”, H: 31.5”, W: 10”; stand H: 48”, stand base: 19.75 by 19.75”)

Ceramic Bust of a Mariner, American, Probably New England, Circa 1875 Unknown maker

Original cobalt, iron and manganese colorants resulting in a primarily black glaze; the uniform and glazes suggest an 1875 or earlier dating. A complete analysis of the material and glazes has been performed by Winterthur and is included. (13-page report)
Condition: Please refer to the Scientific Research and Analysis Laboratory Analytical Report from Winterthur dated October 24, 2004. No repairs of restoration, various losses to the earthenware material especially around the bottom rim and to the left side of the coat; various glaze loses and age cracks. Holes at the stem of each arm and in the back are original and consistent to the firing process of such a large and dense piece. (Height: 17.5” , width11” )

This fine and sensitive figure is extremely rare, one of a very few extant examples. The figure wearing woven cotton trousers, a blue and white shirt and leather shoes remains in excellent condition. The figure was originally connected to a carousel mechanism, the arm moved in a cranking motion while the head swayed back-and-forth. (H: 51"; on stand: 68")
