Circa 1680 to 1700, Carved White Oak, Yellow Pine Lid and Base - SOLD
The rectangular lid, hung from original wooden pintle-hinges, features notched side borders and is scratch-molded at its front edge. The lid is fitted to a conforming case with notched (chip carved) front corners on a projecting molded base. Original lockplate remains intact; nice old color with good patina.

White Pine and Oak, hinged cleating system - SOLD
Initialed "RI" above incise-carved circular devices (four hearts entwined) joined by incised square; this carving is centered by similar carving overlaid with compartmentalized grid within diamond shape centered by vertically carved saw tooth composition at ends of front panel. The slightly projecting lid with molded edge retains original pintle hinges and is above projecting base with canted edges. The overhanging top with fielded carved panel retains original wrought iron handle and is mounted on strap hinges; dovetailed case with similar panels features a pair of lidded tills and is raised on projecting molding resting on compressed-ball feet. Outstanding original condition, best patina.

Lid appears to have been reduced in depth by less than 1-inch; wear to snipe hinge piercing was probably compromised necessitating modification.
The wooden pintle hinge system is very nice; retrofitting probably done during the boxes early working life. Other imperfections are few, and minor.
