Outstanding Pewter Medical Infusion Mug by Henry & Richard Joseph, Late 18th Century A fine and clean example featuring an acanthus leaf decorated handle SOLD

Outstanding Pewter Medical Infusion Mug by Henry & Richard Joseph, Late 18th Century, entire view

Henry and Richard Joseph, London from 1785-1792, Henry was a master pewterer, in business 1736-1784; in partnership with his son, Richard in 1785…scarce, few pieces extant. A piece of camphor was held in the compartment under the pierced brass grate on the lid; the mug was filled with boiling water; a hose was fitted to the chimney on the lid. The patient inhaled air through the hose; piercings on brass grate and handle allowed air to flow into the water…and over the camphor. The combination of fresh air infused with camphor soothed the congestion of the patient’s lungs. Opium and aromatic leaves were also used in the 18th century medical devices. (Measuring 5 3/8’ tall to top of chimney; 4 5/8 to top of lid.)
