Displaying thoughtful design, dovetail joinery and excellent craftmanship; fast threading thumbscrew
with large bean thumbpiece…thought to be a benchtop clamp for sharpening sawblades; great dry
surface. It was said the tool was made and used by notable Shaker, Brother Albert Battles, a lifetime
member who became Elder in 1844. (Furniture maker) The clamp was found in the Tyringham
Community Seed House where seeds were stored and prepared for sale. This Seed House was at one
time larger, but it was moved off its original foundation and downhill to a new site. Later, in the 1950s to
the 1980s, the building was the residence of Jean Brown. The building was moved by Andrews
Construction, clamp acquired by Alice Hale thence to world famous art collector Jean Brown to Shaker
specialist Charles Flint. (12" x 10" x 7")
