Antique Pipe Box, Outstanding Form and Red Painted Surface
Connecticut, Circa 1790 - SOLD

Antique Pipe Box, Outstanding Form and Red Painted Surface
Connecticut, Circa 1790, entire view 1

Maple and Poplar…a great example
A rare and unusual red painted scalloped sided example of great height and form. The tall
superbly shaped backboard continuing to quadruple lobed bottom terminus; the shaped sides
(reverse profile of lobes) joining molded front featuring ogee profile. The tobacco drawer
retains original brass pull. Terrific…very early red paint over original 18th century paint; fabulous
pigment displaying a dry patina at 100% coverage. The box is in generally fine condition with
only minor imperfection constant with age, loss of one lobe which can be expertly restored to
perfectly match; drawer bottom looks to be an old and common replacement; shrinkage crack
to bottom has been attended to. The presence of this pipe box renders the loss unobtrusive.
See Wallace Nutting, Furniture Treasury, 195-197 for an identical box by the same shop.
