Material: Willow and black devils’ claw

Condition: Overall very good condition, rods, and stiches intact

Additional Information: According to J.F. Breazeale author of The Pima and His
Basket
, (Published by the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society in 1923) this
pattern was sometimes called a swing or ladder design for lack of a better term.

A stylish little basket in best white paint, double rim and
double base securing tapered staves…tiny, clinched nails. Inscribed on the bottom, in
pencil, is a note “From Grandfather” [to: illegible] “1902”

Harris was considered one of the most talented basket makers, his work often
compared with Shaker baskets; he may have studied with the Shakers. His work was
also inspired by New England and Taconic Bushwhacker traditions. His distinctive
tradition is the double bottom constructed with two sets of crossed splints resembling a
sunflower. Fine original condition, outstanding paint and patina.
