Samuel Griggs, Painting, Old Farmhouse and Barns, White Mountains
Oil on Canvas
Original stretcher and frame

Samuel W. Griggs (1827-1898) was known as a painter of the White Mountains of New Hampshire; the Boston City Directory listed him as an Architect from 1848 to 1852…as an artist from 1854 to his death in 1898. The competency of his work strongly suggests that he had professional training, he likely studied under Albert Bierstadt before Bierstadt was well known. Griggs' earliest listed painting, a White Mountain scene, is a work dated1858. Albert Bierstadt coordinated a New Bedford, Massachusetts exhibition in 1858 where Griggs exhibited three works including a White Mountain view. He also exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum from 1855 to 1863, as well as the Boston Art Club at various times. Samuel Griggs died in Boston in the year 1898. The stretcher displays a label for Chas. J. Edmands, Dealer in Artist materials, No. 12 Broomfield Street, Boston, Mass.
