Rare Woodland Indian Powder Horn
Possibly Iroquois, New York
1775 to 1800

An uncommon figural motif for a powder horn of this kind, the male human figure on the end of this powder horn shows an expressive face with inset stone eyes, detached arms, and pronounced digits. The horn shows little other decoration on the body, save a distinct scalloped rim with incised cross-hatching. Relatively scarce, the only like example to be published is the ‘Beauchamp Horn’ late of the William H. Guthman Collection (see Dresslar, Jim. Folk Art of Early America; the Engraved Powder Horn. Dresslar Publishing Co., 1996). (Length: 8”)
