A Period Yeager Boys Rifle, Relief Carved Stock, Sliding Wood Patch Box Cover
The fine lock signed: “IELESCH” & “A. MEHLIS”
Likely Mehlis, Germany, Early 1830’s
Percussion, .54 Caliber Slightly Swamped Rifled Barrel with Sharp & Clean Bore

A Period Yeager Boys Rifle, Relief Carved Stock, Sliding Wood Patch Box Cover, right facing

With a 13.5" swamped octagonal rifled barrel retaining original front and rear sights and most of its
original blue. The full stock features raised carving around the tang, raised cheek piece, rammer ferrules,
channel, lockplate and sideplate. Wood patchbox lid is raised and carved; carving centering forend of
trigger guard and following barrel and rammer channel. Brass mounts include two fancy engraved and
faceted ramrod pipes, trigger guard is sculpted and engraved; sideplate with beveled edges and fancy
profile is engraved; also, the wide faceted buttplate is engraved. The butt-end of sliding patchbox lid is
ornamented with a conforming and engraved brass plate. The flaming grained wood has nice color and
patina; The forend is mounted with carved horn; rammer with horn tip appears to be of fruitwood. All
metal is clean and smooth. The lock plate is beautifully made, straight-line border engraved and displays
the name “IELESCH” within a fancy rococo ribbon; lock also engraved A. Mehlis; we have yet to locate
the maker including within Stockel. Sharing additional lock information…dolphin hammer, raised and
fluted snail area reminiscent of a scallop shell; trigger floor plate features tiny scalloped and engraved
borders and a shaped terminus; double set trigger; tight and smooth action. A very nice gun with only a
few tight age fissures due to shrinkage in the forend consistent with age,
else fine and original; overall length: 29.25”)
